Waveney Res 0 Ransomes Sports 0 (5-4 on pens)
Waveney advanced in this SCFA cup tie with a penalty shoot-out win over Ransomes Sports as their fifth and final spot-kick proved decisive after the visitors had missed from 12 yards. This tense game has ended 0-0 with neither side unable to break the deadlock.
There was no early advantage for either side in the shoot-out as both sides penalty takers dispatched their opening four penalties with ease, both teams proving perfect from the spot. The pressure of keeping Ransomes in the competition however proved too much as they nissed their fifth penalty, but not so for Waveney, as they moved into the next round draw with an emphatic finish.
The thrilling ending was hardly in keeping with a sometimes stodgy occasion as both sides appeared to struggle to reach their highest levels.
It was a day of anticipation, tension and ultimate heartbreak with Ransomes almost off to the perfect start. A second minute corner, won by Ransomes on the right, saw Josh Connick rise the highest in a crowded goalmouth but the youngster, provided with the opportunity to open his club account, headed over.
Waveney then crafted out their one and only chance of the first half on six minutes when a deep cross from the right was headed over at the back post and thereafter, Ransomes were the ones to create the better chances of the half. Yani Duka’s run set up Brandon Archer but his powerful drive was blocked and hacked clear on 21 minutes. Archer was then presented with another chance just after the half hour mark as Ransomes searched for the opening goal. Brandon Thomas played a delightful ball through the lines that saw BA roll his marker and break clear towards goal in the inside right channel. With the home keeper advancing, BA lifted his shot over him only to watch as it fell agonisingly wide of the far post. And, the previous in-form striker could not believe it when, he failed to make good contact on a Jack Randall cut back from the left bye-line, a stretching lunge saw the inviting delivering just out of reach.
Unfortunately, this period of domination, with nothing to show, would ultimately cost Ransomes.
The Waveney manager was not happy with his team’s performance at half-time. Ransomes had been the better of the two teams, but he would have been encouraged by his sides opening response to the second half. Ransomes were almost punished during these exchanges but Jack Frinton, looking a more accomplished keeper with each passing game, made a sharp save low to his left to keep parity in the match.
The momentum seemed to now be with Waveney but they did precious little with it, struggling to really hurt Ransomes. A couple of injuries stalled the game and Ransomes were better for the breather, and tellingly, from this point, neither side registered a shot of note on target during a half of very few chances. Admittedly, in time added on, Jack Randall went close for Ransomes with a thumping shot that curled wide of the far post, before Waveney had their opportunity to win the tie, but poked wide of the upright from six yards as both sides ensured a tense end to the stalemate with eight added minutes.
Although highly disappointing to lose on penalties, Matt Oxbrow was a constant for Ransomes, encouraging from the back, and supporting the youngsters around him. It was hats off too as improvements were seen on the day in young Jack Ferguson, Harley Rush and Josh Connick. Much more of this on a consistent and regular basis and Ransomes will be in a better place with the power balance within the side readjusted. We all know however, that this will only be secured with time and commitment from both the players and management, but for the moment, the Senior players still have a big part to play in their development, and the clubs stability.

REFEREE: Sam Hollman
A quick-fire brace late on the first half from Callum Park helped Sporting to an important three points as they seek to move away from the log jam at the foot of the table
The opening half-hour was an even affair. James Garrod-Smith volleyed an early chance wide for the hosts and Will Firrell lobbed over but it was Wickham who went the closest when a brilliant close-range stop from Noah Moss prevented an Alex Wheeler own goal. Moss then came to the rescue again as he raced out to block Luke Howard.
Visiting keeper Russell Young micued a clearance shortly afterwards but Dexter Driscoll’s lob into the unguarded net went wide.
Sporting them began to get on top and Park squared to Will Firrell whose effort cannoned off the bar. The hosts then took the lead on 38 minutes when Young could only push a corner into the path of an onrushing Park to finish.
Sporting doubled the lead in their next attack as Harry Mckeown kept alive Garrod-Smith’s cross and when his effort was scrambled clear Park fired home the loose ball.
Wickham’s cause was not helped early in the second period with Josh Button going on the sin-bin amidst a flurry of yellow cards.
Button went close on his return but dragged his angled shot wide.
Wickham did pull a goal back on 70 minutes with Matt Coar driving a low 20 yarder into the corner of the net. Ewan Hailstone then could have restored the two goal advantage only to blaze over.
Wickham then had a great chance to equalise as Callum Knights was brought down in the box only for Knights to strike the post from the resultant spot-kick and Sporting held on for the win.
HALLOWEEN HORROR SHOW FOR COPS!
Cops Cop a trouncing at Trimley
Trimley Red Devils FC 5 Coplestonians FC 0
The early play was all Cops as the lively Jonny Linard created some dangerous chances for the visitors. Indeed, Cops should have been a couple in front by the time Trimley had their first chance which was well saved by Callum Deacon. A string of missed opportunities was followed by the inevitable as Trimley opened the scoring. Jordan Godbold fired wide and then was unlucky to see the ball run wide when he broke past the defence and rounded the keeper. Trimley took full advantage and notched again in spite of calls for two offside decisions which were not given. Godbold then saw his breaking run denied by the keeper and Linard hit the bar. Cops must have thought their pockets had been picked as Trimley made it three prior to the break. HT 3-0.
The home side were much the better side in the second half and soon stretched their lead as they easily broke through the Cops back line. It was damage limitation for the visitors now as they seemed unable to break through the Trimley defence. Indeed the home side notched again with a very good goal on the break to record an emphatic win. FT 5-0.
MOTM Drew Connick – a below par performance by the side today but the Cops striker never stopped trying and gave 100% throughout.
RESERVES RUN LEADERS CLOSE.
But are architects of their own downfall!
SIL DIVISION TWO
Coplestonians Reserves 1 Regrave Rangers 3
Cops Reserves welcomed the undefeated league leaders, Redgrave Rangers, to the school. It was soon pretty obvious that we would need to be at our best to get any sort of result against a team that started the game in a very good, quick, slick manner. In the first 15 minutes Redgrave were quickest to the ball in almost every situation, the excellent 3G surface allowing them to play at pace and with accuracy. It was no surprise therefore that they took the lead after 16 minutes with a neat ball over the top of our defenders allowing one of their pacy forwards through on goal to neatly clip the ball over the advancing goalkeeper and into the net.
To their credit, Cops worked hard to keep the score down to 1-0, gradually coming more into the game and being rewarded when Adam Shaw scored at the second attempt from a corner on 40 minutes.
Cops opened the second half in a much more positive manner and were matching their opponents in all areas of the pitch until two incidents completely changed the outcome of the game. On 68 minutes, Cops had a player “sent to the sin bin” by the referee for speaking out of turn too many times and it was during this period when they were down to 10 men that Redgrave scored a rather fortunate goal when a cross from the left wing sailed over the goalkeeper’s head and into the far corner of the net.
Cops were back to 11 men seven minutes later but within four minutes of coming back on to the field, the same player received a second yellow card for a foul and was sent off !!
Redgrave again took advantage of the extra player on the field to score a third and went on to play out the rest of the game with no real threat to their goal.
A disappointing result in the end therefore in that if we had kept 11 players on the pitch we may well have gone on and at least held out for a draw. Credit to Redgrave however in that they took advantage of our lack of discipline and their “extra player” in the second half to go on and win the game. They were by far the best team the Reserves have faced in the league this season and they will “be the team to beat” if any other team “fancies their chances” of winning Division 2 this season !
Cops man of the match – Adam Shaw – not only for his goal but also for another impressive defensive performance against the three very good Redgrave forwards.
Special mention also to young Matt Simmons who came on as a substitute late in the first half and “held his own” for the rest of the game against the impressive Redgrave winger who had plenty of Senior Division experience.
