SIL Senior League: Henley Athletic FC 6-2 Grundisburgh FC
A crowd of 95, saw an exciting game between two committed teams, the ever-improving Henley defeating Grundisburgh 6-2 to go third in the table.
Yet again Henley were quickest out of the blocks and looked like they should have had a 1st minute penalty when Prime was felled as he burst into the area, but appeals were waved away. In the 3rdminute White was released by a lovely lifted ball, he knocked it past the keeper, but was defeated by the narrow angle and saw his shot hit the foot of the post. The sustained Henley pressure told on 5 minutes, Hooley twisting past his marker, his shot going underneath keeper Waters for 1-0. The lead was short lived as only 2 minutes later Grundisburgh found an equaliser, Page superbly curling his shot into the top corner for 1-1.
But Henley kept attacking and were rewarded after 19 minutes, Hooley battling hard to keep the ball in play, before looping a cross to the back post, where Cole slid in to poke home for 2-1. But once again Grundisburgh came back, Prime adjudged to have committed a foul in the box, and ex Hen Ablitt making no mistake with the penalty to make it 2-2. A touch of class from Ablitt, not celebrating scoring against his former club. Henley continued to have the lion’s share of the possession but at the break the score remained 2-2.
Henley, were on the attack again after the restart, Wharton-Richardson heading narrowly wide from a Hooley freekick after 48 minutes. But Henley didn’t have to wait too long to retake the lead, on 50 minutes, Bell’s header, from a Hooley corner, deflecting over the line off Merrick for 3-2. Wharton-Richardson came close again on 65 minutes, weaving through a packed defence, but his shot flashed wide of the post. Substitutes Ballard and Dende combined for Henley’s 4thon 70 minutes, Ballard with a precise diagonal ball and Dende smashing past Waters at his near post for 4-2. Henley were streaming forward now, the fresh legs telling, Dende reacting to a quick throw in, Tejano nodding the ball on to Ballard, who absolutely rifled home from the edge of the area to make it 5-2 after 77 minutes.
To their credit, Grundisburgh refused to quit, hitting the post from a narrow angle on 80 minutes, and a terrific long range freekick hitting the bar after 86 minutes. But it was Henley who had the final say, the prolific Bell, heading home in the 93rd minute to bring the final score to 6-2.
A good all round team performance from the revamped Hens, with all 16 playing their part, Ben Prime won MOTM, his workrate, distribution and pace causing the visitors an issue all game. Indeed, the pace and link up play, of all 5 of Henley’s front men, proved too much for Grundisburgh to handle on the day. However Grundisburgh do play some nice football, especially going forward and despite their recent run or poor results, will have enough to stay in Senior football.

Suffolk & Ipswich League Division 5 – 26/10/2024
Witnesham Wasps 5 – 0 Saxmundham Sports FC Reserves
Witnesham Goalscorers:
Darryn VanOene x3
James Claridge
James Kincaid
Today’s fixture was a top of the table clash in SIL Division 5 against Saxmundham Sports Reserves at St Audry’s, with both sides coming into the game in good form, but it was Witnesham who took the 3 points with a composed and impactful performance.
Witnesham started the game very bright, with Charlie Guy and James Claridge making to be an impactful on the left flank of the pitch, with several dangerous crosses early doors, but it was James Kincaid who opened the scoring following a cute 1-2 with Darryn VanOene on the edge of the box leaving Kincaid with acres of space to pick his spot and put it in the bottom right corner.
Shortly after, it was Kincaid who became provider, intercepting a misplaced pass from the opposition and slotting in James Claridge to go one on one against the full back, knocks it past him, and hits it across the keeper into the bottom right corner.
Witnesham kept knocking on the door for a third, denied by some fine saves from the opposition keeper, and from a corner, hitting the crossbar 3 times in the space of a few seconds from efforts by Darryn VanOene, Kai Duncan, and Dave Barker. Saxmundham still threatened with their own chances, with one attempt from the edge of the box resulting in a fingertip save from goalkeeper Rhys Griggs onto the post.
Witnesham nabbed a third just before halftime, with Kai Duncan playing a lovely ball over the top, with Darryn VanOene beating the offside trap, bringing the ball down, and slotting it past the keeper.
As the second half begun, Witnesham kept the pressure on Saxmundham, and were rewarded with a further 2 goals within the first 10 minutes, both from Darryn VanOene to complete his hattrick, his 5th in a row this season. The first was a headed effort from close range following the Saxmundham goalkeeper tipping a header from the corner onto the crossbar, VanOene headed in the rebound. The second was a carbon-copy to his first goal, with Kincaid providing the assist this time round.
Saxmundham didn’t let their heads slip following a fast Witnesham start to the second half, hitting the crossbar from Saxmundham #10 Keiran Turner, previously of Hadleigh & Whitton, and the opposition standout player. Griggs was also forced into several good saves, but Witnesham held firm to preserve the clean sheet, their 3rd for the season.
Youth Progression was also the theme of the day with debuts for 2 of Witnesham’s current crop of under 18’s in the second half from Jay Nokes and Liam Kidgell, and a return to the first team for George Swanton, who impressed on the right wing, rewarding his efforts with man of the match. We continue look to create a pathway into adults football for our youth team.
The result puts Witnesham on 7 wins out of 7 in the league, and extending the gap at the top of the table. We now have a few weeks off before continuing our adventure in Suffolk Primary Cup against today’s opponents.

Ransomes Sports 6 Cockfield Utd Res 3

Ransomes Sports’ desire and hunger in their convincing 6-3 league win over Cockfield at Sidegate Avenue was fuelled by being “sick of losing”. Ransomes had come under enormous pressure after last week’s chastening defeat, and they wanted to stand up all together. This was not just a victory; it was an exorcism.
It has become evident that Ransomes youngsters are not going to learn game management at adult level without a good sprinkling of experienced players around them to offer encouragement and advice – they had that in abundance in this game. Cockfield started passively and were quickly dominated by a Ransomes side that carried a greater threat. The goal that started it all off for Ransomes was glorious. Crowded out on the edge of the box and out of ideas, Brandon Archer laid the ball off for Reece Dobson. He concentrated on the connection and it was sweet, his first-time shot curling and zinging into the top corner. It was a goal of real quality and the hosts were one up after 18 minutes.
There was then a worry for Ransomes on 28 minutes as they lost young defender Brandon Thomas to injury, but they needn’t have worried. His replacement, Josh Connick had only been on a minute before he set up goal number two for Brandon Archer. It was a slide rule pass through the lines that allowed BA to race through with the challenging defender unable to check his advance, and he slammed home in style, giving Reynolds in goal no chance. It was a fitting goal for Ransomes leading goalscorer has Reynolds had denied him earlier from opening his account with the outstanding save of the game.
At this stage of the match, everything was becoming too easy for Ransomes but on 37 minutes, they were exposed at the back and Nelson raced clear to score at the second attempt after Jack Friston had denied his first effort.
The Cockfield comeback was short lived as the hosts responded to this setback straightaway. Luke Andrews, who was Ransomes’ liveliest performer by some distance during the first half, earnt his side a free kick, and not for the first time during this opening period his incisive and direct approach had caused the Cockfield defence problems. From wide right of the edge of the penalty area, everyone was expecting Jack Severy’s delivery to be crossed into the box. Instead, he played a square ball off to Luke Andrews whose drilled shot from the edge of the box struck the base of the far post before going in to restore the two-goal home advantage.
Ransomes had two more soon after half-time, Jack Severy the provider on both occasions. On 46 minutes, his pass played in Brandon Archer with the striker relishing the opportunity provided for him to cooly add his second of the afternoon. Ten minutes later and Reece Dobson extinguished any Cockfield comeback hopes they may have had when he stooped to head home Jack Severy’s pacey in swinging corner from the right.
At this point, the visitors were barely weathering a storm, effectively it was game over. Whether Ransomes relaxed or Cockfield found a new energy, Towns did manage a second for the visitors on 69 minutes as his goal bound effort took a wicked deflection off Neil Calver to loop over Jack Friston.
Ransomes resurgence however continued when Harley Rush lifted a clever ball over the Cockfield defence. It was a measured, defence-splitting pass inviting Matt Oxbrow to show all his old guile and experience as he lifted his shot over Reynolds for the hosts sixth goal of the afternoon.
With just over 10 minutes remaining, a touch of defensive fragility allowed Whiting to yet again reduce the deficit for the visitors, but there was to be no spoiling role. They had spent the first hour of this match puzzling over how to get the better of Ransomes by which time they were already four goals adrift.
The home side came into this match having failed to score more than two goals in a league match all season, but Cockfield made things surprisingly easy for Ransomes to remedy this. Eventually however, the visitors stirred, and Ransomes momentarily looked a little skittish, but it was all “too little, too late” – the clock was always against them.
The importance of the senior players and their inclusion today certainly added a defensive organisation, and an unwillingness to make soft mistakes under pressure. Their constant advice and guidance enabled youngsters such as Callum Meadows, Luke Andrews, Josh Connick and Harley Rush to profit, and show more composure on the ball than they have in recent weeks, allowing this match to tell a story of redemption.
LEAGUE LEADERS JUST PIP COPS!
Mutimer & Pleace on target as Cops put in a much improved performance
SIL DIVISION THREE
Coplestonians Development 2 Occold 3
Occold came to Copleston today, the visitors sitting at the top of the league after a long unbeaten run.
Cops coming off the back of a string of difficult away games and with another much changed side had it all to do.
The away side struck first when a contentious corner was given after what looked to be a kick to the head of the Cops defender.
But Cops didn’t stay alert to the danger and from the resulting corner Occold took the lead (1-0).
Occold were looking dangerous on the ball, but as the half went on Coplestonians grew into the game and it was not against the run of play when Cops equalised. A great ball over the top by Ben Goddard was brought down on the edge of the box by Freddie Mutimer who crashed it past the Keeper to equalise (1-1).
And Cops could’ve been ahead before the break, a few chances but the away side held out to keep the game level at the break. HT 1-1
The second half was straight back into the action from the first minute when another decision went against the Cops; Daryl Fry was judged to have kicked the winger in the box when it looked more like the player kicked him. But from the resulting penalty the ball was fired over the top to keep the scores level.
Cops had their own penalty appeal when Charlie King was bundled down in the box but nothing was given.
Then a moment which brought back visions of Keiran Dyer and Lee Bowyer as two Occold players had a disagreement which resulted in them having a fight.
Both players should’ve been red carded but the referee chose to have a word instead when it looked likely he was going to send them off.
That decision came back to haunt Cops when one of the players from that fight popped up for the second goal from a corner, again Cops failing to deal with it (1-2).
And it looked like the game was getting away from Cops when Occold broke down the right and the cross was put into the net (1-3)
But the young Cops side got themselves together and put all the pressure on the visitors which was rewarded with a spot kick. Up stepped Darcy Pleace to smash in the resulting penalty to give Cops a lifeline in the game with minutes to go. (2-3).
Cops really chucked everything they had in the last few minutes, Dave White going close at the back post from a ball crossed into the box. There was a late chance for Adam Newson when the ball broke midfield and was laid back to him, he hit the ball from distance which just drifted over the bar. Final score 2-3 to Occold.
A much more positive game from the Cops and but for a little bit of defensive naivety would’ve gone on to get something out of the game today with a huge improvement from everybody and something to build on.
CONNICK & READ AT THE DOUBLE AS SPORTING SHIP SEVEN!
Cops fire back but indebted to Deacon for fine saves.
Coplestonians 7 Sporting 87 2
It looked like Cops wanted to impose themselves early in this game as they pressed forward from the off. Indeed, they were ahead on two minutes as Luke Read fired home after his first shot was blocked.
Sporting weren’t fazed and soon forced Callum Deacon into making a fine save. Their pressure then told as Cops squandered possession. From a corner Sporting equalised with a near post header and it was fully deserved. The game gradually shifted back in Cops favour and the visiting keeper made a couple of fine saves to deny Adam Todd and Will Oxbrow. Cops re-took the lead on 37 minutes when Drew Connick took advantage of a poor clearance and fired home. Prior to half time Cops extended their lead when Baden Holmes (sponsored by Ian Mathews) headed home at the far post to make it 3-1. HT 3-1
After the break it was the Cops striker Drew Connick who extended the lead with a deflected shot. Connick then broke forward with pace and set up Jordan Godbold to finish well to make it 5-1.
Cops should have been cruising at this point but they gifted the opposition a goal with a misplaced back pass which was well finished by a Sporting attacker. This was only a brief moment of hope for the visitors as a Godbold corner picked out Luke Read to fire home a sixth goal for Cops. Cops brought on all their subs at this point and it enabled the opposition to create a few chances. However, keeper Callum Deacon was up to the challenge and saved several one on one chances to keep Sporting at bay. Cops had the final say when the returning Danny Allen took advantage of a ball from the dangerous Godbold to fire home from close range. FT 7-2
