Morrison Freight Cup: Halesworth Town FC 0-0 Henley Athletic FC
Although it’s our longest journey of the season, we all know we’ll have a great welcome awaiting us at Halesworth. Close rivals for many years now, our games are always full blooded and tight affairs, in fact I struggle to remember one that didn’t finish within a single goal margin. Full commitment from both sets of players on the pitch and both sets of supporters off it during the match, but respect before and after too. It was good to see the ground improvements Halesworth are making in preparation for their proposed step up to Thurlow Nunn football, the pitch and facilities look great.
The game began with a minutes silence for the sadly, recently departed Gerald Ellis, Halesworth’s Life President, immaculately observed by all 87 in attendance.
Both teams flew out of the blocks, but the defences were in the ascendancy, Grabowski for Henley saw his shot blocked after 10 minutes, Halesworth came perilously close with a ball across the box after 20 minutes, Alex Prime doing well to get a foot in to prevent a tap in. Halesworth had the better chances of the opening half, but failed to really test Punter in the Henley goal, at the other end, Anderson too, remained largely untroubled, Cole and Ballard having efforts blocked before they could get to him. Leaving the score 0-0 at the break.
Henley had the 1st chance of the 2ndhalf, Cooper coming close but denied by an offside flag at the last moment. Henley did open the scoring after 53 minutes, fine hold up play from Cooper in the middle, before picking out Ballard wide on the left, despite the close attentions of two markers, Ballard broke free and played a defence splitting pass into the feet of White’s run. Forced wide by the presence of a defender and by keeper Anderson racing off his line, White impudently chipped over Anderson with a brilliant finish to make it 0-1.
Halesworth threw everything at Henley in search of an equaliser, but Henley held firm. On 67 minutes Punter was called into action for his best save of the day, Tejano and Storey blocking the two follow up shots. Henley still looked sharp on the break though, the constant threat of Dende and Cole’s pace preventing Halesworth from fully committing forward. Despite the Halesworth pressure, some good game management saw Henley see the game out for a 0-1 victory and a trip to Kirton in the Quarter-Finals.
Not an especially impressive 1st half from Henley, but a strong all round team showing in the second period, saw us through. White was declared MOTM, the quality of his goal matched his workrate, the Prime brothers well worth a mention too, as was keeper Punter, his calmness infectious throughout the side.
Many thanks to our hosts, like us, going through a transitional season, a good side that play football in the right manner.

STOWUPLAND SCORER
Tom Lewis 67 mins
ATTENDANCE: 32
REFEREE: Robert Gooch
Wickham Market deservedly progressed to the last eight of the competition with a committed performance though they were assisted by the absence of the visitors first choice keeper Dale Watling.
During the early exchanges it looked as if it was going to be a close game with both sides putting in some strong tackles although not really creating any clear-cut chances
However, Liam Silver then set Matt Coar free down the left and he was flattened by the unrushing Falcons’ keeper Samson Bolvis for a stonewall penalty. Jay Tomlinson easily converted from the spot.
Things then got worse for debutant Bolvis when he failed to deal with a hopeful punt upfield and Liam Silver ran the ball into an empty net.
It was 3-0 just before the half hour as Craig Hazlwood squared the ball to Coar who crashed home an angled drive into the far corner.
Jordan Southgate then did fire narrowly over the bar for the Falcons. However, Bolvis punched a Silver corner straight up into the air just before the break and Ryan Perry easily headed home number four.
Tom Lewis did pull a goal back from close range midway through the second period for Stowupland following a deep Gavin Van Oene free-kick which was knocked back into his path but the damage had already been done.
Wickham make the trip to Redgrave Rangers in the Quarter-Finals.

Witnesham Wasps 4-0 Sporting 87 A’s
Witnesham Goalscorers:
James Claridge x3
Darryn Van Oene
Witnesham Wasps progressed into the semi finals of the divisional cup following a scintillating second half display to beat Sporting 87 A’s 4-0 away at the Victory Ground. This was a rearranged fixture following a frozen pitch postponing the initial fixture earlier in the month.
The day wasn’t all plain sailing for Witnesham, with a quite sloppy first half by their standards, leaving Sporting with a few good opportunities themselves, with some testing Wasps keeper Luke Kingham-Jones. Witnesham did create chances of their own but to no real end product, however, after 30 minutes, they got a hold of the game and took the lead. Following some great footwork by Van Oene on the edge of the box, he feeds through James Claridge who is in acres in space to take a touch and smash it past the keeper.
Afterwards, it was a very uneventful rest of the half, with lots of the play being in the middle of the field. But at the start of the second half, Witnesham turned on the style, and within minutes, scored. Charlie Guy takes a bouncing ball from just inside his half and inch perfectly side volleys it over the top to Van Oene, who takes it down and lifts the ball over the onrushing keeper. Shortly after it was 3, with Claridge finding himself free in the box to head in an Isaac Cocker corner. And soon after that, Claridge sealed his hattrick, a carbon copy of the first goal, with Van Oene playing Claridge through one on one to hit home.
The scoreline could of been even more, with Van Oene nearly having his own hattrick by hitting the crossbar and the post on separate occasions. Sporting also nearly spoiled Witnesham’s clean sheet by getting the ball back from a poor clearance and had a golden opportunity due to a Kingham-Jones slip, but the keeper recovered well to spread himself to smother the ball. David Barker also doing well to put pressure on the Sporting player to knock him off his stride slightly.
A strong result for Witnesham against higher league opposition, and puts them in good stead for the future based on how their season is going so far. Their focus returns to the league as they are set for a top of the table clash away to Saxmundham Reserves. This game has already had 2 fixtures this season, both in favour to Witnesham with the scores being 5-0 and 7-3 in the league and cup respectively.
The draw has already been made for the semi final, where Witnesham welcome Coddenham Athletic to St Audry’s on February 15th. The otherside of the draw sees Hadleigh Brettsiders take on Benhall St Mary.

Archer hits the Bullseye with precision to send Ransomes through
Paul Deacon26 Jan – 06:49
Ransomes Sports 1 AFC Kesgrave Reserves 0
A solitary goal from Brandon Archer on 52 minutes was enough to secure Ransomes Sports a place in the semi-finals where they will now travel to face Henley Athletic.
This was a most difficult encounter for Ransomes as AFC Kesgrave tore into the home side from the first whistle, refusing to give Ransomes an inch and forcing turnovers high up the pitch. Panicky, amateurish, and dicing with defeat was the situation Ransomes found themselves in so early in the game. For the opening 31 minutes, AFC Kesgrave enjoyed Ransomes’ hospiyality as the home side seemed intent on doing everything in their power to hand the visitors a safe passage through to the semi-finals.
Instead of collapsing though, Ransomes regained some of their composure as the visitors began to show an impotence in the final third. Ransomes could feel the heat, but they could also sense opportunity as both Brandon Archer and Yani Duka went close in quick succession.
Ransomes improved after the break, but only slightly, whilst AFC Kesgrave continued to struggle to penetrate the hosts rear-guard. Presumably, the eventual winner when it came, irritated and gnawed the visitors. You could understand why. They had had the lion’s share of the possession but what was more in evidence was their lack of a creative spark in those decisive areas.
Instead, it was left to Ransomes to draw first blood with a quality crafted goal. A measured pass from Yani Duka Duka was threaded across the AFC penalty area which the incoming Brandon Archer took in his stride to tuck his crisp side-footed finish into the opposite corner for 1-0.
Ransomes task now appeared more comfortable but there were misses from the home side – most glaringly from the captain Mo File.
While the scoreline was tight, AFC Kesgrave were never out of it, even if they continued with their struggles to create a worthwhile opening. Their reckless extravagance and wastefulness of the possession they had worked so hard for was their enemy as they continued to search for that cutting edge – the game therefore remained tense.
It was not until the 88th minute that AFC had their first shot on target; a crushing volley from an unkind angle at the far post that Jack Friston comfortably touched over – it was as close as the visitors were to come in their attempt to force this game into penalties.
Ransomes managed the occasion better than AFC Kesgrave. They may have been tame for most of this match and lacking their usual oomph, but what did AFC Kesgrave create of clearcut note? They menaced but remained toothless, with an inability to fully drive home the superiority they enjoyed. This was what ultimately left them wondering what might have been.
For Ransomes, it clearly wasn’t the best performance from them, with a basic lack of tempo and flair, but they were able to wrest the game away from their opponents and then hold them at arms length – that should continue the self-confidence and belief as they continue their regeneration.

OX DIVES TO HEAD COPS UP THE TABLE.
Linard and Oxbrow do the business for Cops!
GATEWAY14 SUFFOLK & IPSWICH LEAGUE – SENIOR DIVISION
(Cops are sponsored by Venue 16)
Coplestonians 3 Trimley Red Devils 1
Cops moved up to third place in the table with this win. However, the scoreline doesn’t reflect the commitment and resilience Cops had to show against a fine visiting side.
Both sides had changes from the previous week when Cops had edged a 2-0 cup win. Cops young forward MacKay had to play at right back because of suspensions and injuries.
Cops started well and looked the better side in the early stages. A through ball from Will Oxbrow sent Jonny Linard clear and the Cops striker made no mistake as he finished well past keeper Crump on 15 mins.
Trimley began to come more into the game and some great defending by Lewis Owen and skipper Grant Monoghan kept the visitors at bay. A rasping shot from Trimley saw Callum Deacon make a brilliant save which saw the visitors holding their heads in their hands.
Trimley were in the ascendancy at this stage and they won a penalty when Chidlow was denied a run on goal by an outstretched arm. The penalty was dispatched (1-1) but it was Cops who scored the next goal when a cross from Baden Holmes saw Will Oxbrow’s diving header find the net. HT 2-1
After the break it was the visitors who pressed to get back into the game. Callum Deacon made another fine save for Cops and punched clear on several occasions to keep Cops in the lead. Trimley had chances and when Deacon’s save saw the ball hit the post it rolled across the goal and to safety.
Cops looked dangerous on the break and brilliant work by Jonny Linnard saw him lose his balance and stumble towards the goal and then inexplicably roll the ball past the advancing Crump. An amazing goal but the visitors were not finished and pressed forward to get back into the game.
Great defending saw Cops deny the visitors and they introduced youngsters Dan Ramsey and Jake Howells for their 1st team debuts to bolster their resilience.
