Morrison Freight Cup Quarter Final: Kirton Athletic FC 2-0 Henley Athletic FC
Henley tumbled out of the Morrison Freight Cup, losing 2-0 to determined and committed Kirton Athletic in front of a crowd of 68.
With Ben Prime injured and Cowan and Cole rested with minor knocks, it was a different looking Henley that turned out on the day. Dende, Ballard and Grabowski starting, with White dropping back to fullback and Graham in the middle.
It nearly paid off in the 2nd minute, Dende bursting clear, his shot looked initially as though it had crossed the line, before it was cleared via the post. Despite Henley having the lion’s share of possession, it was Kirton who opened the scoring, McCarthy hitting a low drive into the bottom corner from a good 25 yards out, to make it 1-0. Six minutes later, Kirton thought they had another, as they slotted home with Hen’s keeper Punter down injured, but they were denied by an offside flag.
Henley applied the pressure, Graham forcing a good save after 22 minutes, as Kirton continued to defend bravely, with clearance after clearance as Henley rained in a total of 12 first half corners. But Kirton always posed a threat on the break, again having the ball in the net after 39 minutes, but once again denied by a flag, this time for kicking it out of the keeper’s control. The half finishing 1-0.
The second half saw Henley lay siege to the home goal, with Kirton getting 10 men back at all times and defending bravely. Henley came very close, Graham hitting the bar after 50 minutes, Wharton-Richardson blazed over after 65 minutes, Hooley, Dende, Grabowski and White seeing efforts saved or flash wide. As in the opening half, Henley had a multitude of corners, Storey, Bell and Cooper all seeing headers go wide or high as the visitors pushed for the equaliser.
As is so often the case with so many committed forward, deep into time added on, Kirton broke, the shot beating Punter, but stopped on the line by Shore who threw himself in the way to block. Despite his arm being by his side, the ball did strike it, which saw Kirton receive a penalty and Shore a red card. Bance slammed home the spot kick for 2-0 and Kirton progressed to the semis.
As was commented on the sideline, “we could play until midnight and not score today”, sometimes it’s just not your day, we did play some good stuff at times, epitomised by MOTM Grabowski. But, today was, and quite rightly so, all about respecting a fantastic team performance by Kirton, character, commitment, grit, determination and no little talent, all in abundance from their entire squad. They were fully deserving of their win and all at Henley wish them good luck in their semi-final.

REDGRAVE SCORERS:
Jordan Tubby 10 mins
Artur Leszczynski 84 mins (pen)
WICKHAM MARKET SCORERS:
Jordan Nicholls 31 & 75 mins (pen)
Jordan Button 53 mins
Franklin Fitzmaurice 87 mins
Senior side Wickham Market progressed to the last four after coming from behind to defeat the Division Two leaders who ended the game with nine men.
Josh Button crashed an effort against the underside of the bar early on for the visitors after a cross from Nicholls only for Redgrave to go straight up the other end and open the scoring through a fine effort from Jordan Tubby after he was played in by Artur Leszczynski
Market pressed for the equaliser for most of the rest of the half and it came on the half hour as Jordan Nicholls converted from the edge of the area.
Josh Button then put Wickham in front on 53 minutes firing home off a post. Button and Tyler Matthews then clashed near the dugouts and both received yellow cards before Nicholls netted his second, this time from the spot, with 15 minutes of normal time remaining.
Things got more difficult for Redgrave as Matthews was sent off having received a second yellow.
However Artur Leszczynski pulled a goal back from the spot after Cameron Rossell was upended before Franklin Fitzmaurice made the game safe for the visitors after he was initially denied by a fine stop from Sam Everett. Tubby was then sin-binned and there was still time for the nine-man hosts to claim for another spot-kick just before the final whistle.

Underwhelming Ransomes extend winning run to seven games

Ransomes Sports 2 Coplestonians Developement 1

Underwhelming Ransomes sealed a win that extended their unbeaten run into 2025 but hardly issued a statement of intent as they toiled to a narrow 2-1 victory. It was ugly, extraordinarily tense, exponentially so, but it should never have been. It only made the release for Ransomes at the very end feel even more dramatic. It was an excruciating game and Ransomes will surely have to play better than this if they are to extend the adventure.
More was expected of Ransomes after they made a lightning start, scoring inside the opening two minutes through Jack Cates. His initial run at goal was halted as he over-run the ball but he tenaciously recovered possession to close in on the visitor’s penalty area, and from an angle left of the goal, his low drive found the far bottom corner. It was the perfect start for the hosts.
Mo Fike then had a looping header bounce off the top of the crossbar and it was a good opening spell for the home side who were showing more energy than the visiting Coplestonians. After that bright start, ultimately, it was a disappointing game – turgid in fact.
Neither side got a grip of the game because they were both inconsistent with the ball. Both teams gave too many balls away with Ransomes consistently caught in possession all over the pitch. As such, they could never get enough positive sequence of actions that could generate threat and momentum in the right areas. It was to become a frustrating afternoon for the meagre gathering in attendance.
Were Ransomes suffering a hangover from last week’s epic semi-final success? If so, Coplestonians could not take advantage. If Ransomes were showing defects then so too were Coplestonians and both teams looked short of ideas as the first half came to an end.
Ransomes started the second half the more sure of the two teams and forcing the early exchanges, with the impressive Anderson in the visitors goal making two good stops in as many minutes to deny Ransomes extending their lead. With the home side failing to finish the game off, concerns lingered as they continued to labour throughout the second half.
There was a sense of inevitabilty about what was to happen next. First, Ransomes enjoyed an almighty let-off on 65 minutes when Coplestonians thought they had equalised but an early offside flag rightly ruled out the goal. Ransomes however, did not heed that warning and disaster struck on 76 minutes as Lister’s speculative shot from 35 yards sailed over Jack Friston’s central position leaving the hosts fearing the worst. That goal stuck in the throat and hinted at problems for Ransomes.
Fear not. Five minutes later and Ransomes made their play. It was an exhilarating run by Ollie Fairs that brought about the transformation. Flicking on the afterburners, his surging run took him to the edge of the Cops penalty area where he unleashed a low drive that Anderson could only parry on the sretch. Luke Andrews was “Johnny-on-the-spot” as he slammed home the loose ball. It wasn’t just that parity didn’t last; it was that it quickly felt like it had never happened at all. For Ransomes, the alarm bells could quieten down for now.
Ransomes weren’t at the level required today to be convincingly better than the opponent but they did just about enough to warrant the win.
CUP WOE FOR COPS!
Long winning run comes to an end.
SIL MORRISON FREIGHT CUP – QUARTER FINAL
Coplestonians 0 East Bergholt United 4
(Cops are sponsored by Venue 16)
.
Cops’ ten match winning streak was well and truly brought to a halt by the Greens who extended their own good run.
The home side had the better of the chances in the 1st half as East Bergholt pressed forward but allowed Cops to break forward. Adam Todd stretched to slide just wide after great work by Jonny Linard. Jamie Scrivener saved well from Drew Connick and Jordan Godbold screwed his shot wide after breaking clear. The visitors made Cops pay for their missed chances when they took the lead on 41 minutes with their only attempt on target in the first half, a close range effort which bounced off keeper Callum Deacon and then off the attacker to find the net. HT 0-1
The Greens took advantage of a Cops mistake and a quick break to extend their lead straight after the break. It was now an uphill battle for Cops as they pressed forward to get back in the game. The visitors had the good fortune that was on offer as shots were deflected wide but they also defended well to clear some dangerous situations. Jonny Linard shot into the side netting as Cops pressed. A great run and cross from Connick found Nay Woollard whose blocked shot spun towards the goal but once again the spinning ball found Scrivener’s safe hands.
It was not to be Cops day and their early chances came to haunt them as they conceded two late goals to seal the game for the visitors. East Bergholt now take on the mantle of Cup favourites as they progress to the semi-finals!
