SUFFOLK SENIOR CUP & SIL DIVISION ONE ROUND UP
The majority of the Suffolk Senior Cup games took place over the weekend.
Holders Trimley Red Devils progressed with a 2-0 home win over Bacton. Shane Murphy and Ryan Chidlow were the familiar goalscorers for Trimley.
Last season’s Runners-Up Leiston Under 23s also went through as a first half goal from Charlie Atkin was enough to see of SIL Senior Division leaders Old Newton.
A brace from the prolific Pat Summerfield helped Halesworth to a 3-1 win against Wickham Market while Whitton defeated Debenham 2-1 at the Leisure Centre.
Coplestonians kicked out East Bergholt 2-1 seven days after beating the Greens in the league. It was an improved performance from Bergholt with Graeme Butcher levelling after Daniel Allen’s opener before a defensive error let in Connor MacKay for the winner.
Beccles are also through with a 5-1 win over Grundisburgh with Alex Husband scoring twice. Near neighbours Bungay also moved into the next round as they defeated higher league opponents in Needham Market Reserves on penalties after a goalless draw.
It was a good day for the Anglian Combination at goals from Shoman Francis, Ryan Sanders and Lewis Tuffs helped Brandon win 3-0 at Sporting 87 while Mutford and Wrentham won 3-2 at Leiston St Margarets.
Ben Cannell and Evan Collard netted for Kings Park Rangers as they made their debut in the competition only for opponents Stowupland to level late on before winning the penalty shoot-out.
There was a surprise on Friday night when Haverhill Rovers lost 3-1 at Sudbury Sports. Rovers’ Shaun Avis opened the scoring but the visitors had Jordan Baker sent off later in the first half and failed to recover.
In the SIL Division One two late goals from Kaine Fryer salvaged a point for Thurston in a 2-2 draw at home to Stanton.
Charlie McCarthy netted twice for Kirton in a 3-2 win over Saxmundham. Kyle Messenger and Joe Moore were on target for Sax.
Achilles had a comprehensive 6-0 win over Wenhaston while Woolverstone went down 4-1 at Ipswich Wanderers Development. Hayden Catchpole was the visitor’s goalscorer.
Finally Capel Plough and Cockfield played out an entertaining 4-4 draw.

Grundisburgh Res 4 Ransomes Sports 2
Grundisburgh comfortably saw off Ransomes in the end by 4-2 in an entertaining clash at The Playing Field with a comeback win that saw them trailing 2-1 at half-time. An eventful first half produced three goals, chances galore and a couple of glaring misses as Ransomes entered the break somehow retaining the initiative.
Ransomes went in front on four minutes as Luke Andrews opened his account for the club. The young attacker moved forward unchallenged before letting fly from 20 yards with an effort which hit the base of the post and entered the net via a bemused Duverne in the Grundisburgh goal.
Brandon Archer then dragged an effort wide after good work from Shay McKay presented the stand in skipper with the opportunity to increase the visitors lead. The home side however, begun to regroup and they got themselves back on level terms on 25 minutes as Miller vollied home at the far post following a recycled corner, but Ransomes went on to regain the lead five minutes later.
There seemed no danger when Harley Rush picked up possession mid way in the Grundisburgh half, but he managed to pick out the fast breaking Jack Randall and the wing back checked back before delivering the perfect cross for Brandon Archer to head Ransomes back into the lead – a lead they retained going into the half time break.
Although Ransomes held the first half initiative, it was Grundisburgh who started the second period on the front foot and playing with more energy. Debut making Jack Friston made a flying save as Ransomes were caught out from a quickly taken throw in but Grundisburgh were not to be denied. On 50 minutes they levelled the match with an emphatic finish from fully 30 yards, and the home side were in in the ascendancy.
After a wobbly first half, Grundisburgh were beginning to find their stride. The match result was now on the line with more than forty minutes still to play and, in fairness, Grundisburgh were much better than Ransomes following the equaliser – when they had chances, they made the difference count and were comprehensively the better team second half.
Grundisburgh quickly built momentum as the visitors’ legs tired and Miller gave them the lead for the first time on 58 minutes. Four minutes later and there was clear daylight between the two sides as Grundisburgh added a fourth with still over 30 minutes to play.
Ransomes somehow held their nerve not to concede again but the frustrating thing about this team is that they do so many things well going forward but it is in transition where the fundamentals need to improve- Ransomes have to manage these moments better.
The results and points are always important, but the main target for this group is to see how these young players progress as a team. If Ransomes want to compete, they have to be more consistent. It is a long journey but Ransomes are on the right path.

COOL CONNOR CAPS A WIN FOR COPS IN THE SENIOR CUP!
Birthday Boy Allen and super sub MacKay see Cops home
Coplestonians FC 2 East Bergholt United 1
(Cops are sponsored by Venue 16)
The visitors opened well and put Cops under pressure. Early free kicks tested the Cops defence but they saw off the pressure and gradually looked the more likely to open their account. A great ball from Jordan Godbold found Adam Todd and his cross was finished by Daniel Allen. A fine goal from the Cops number nine and there could have been further goals as Cops pushed forward. The Greens were still in the game and on 40 minutes they drew level when a long range effort from Butcher deceived Michal Paduszynski and found the net. HT 1-1.
After the break it was Cops who looked more likely to score and they introduced Connor McKay and Mark Van Oene.
McKay had a quiet start but soon began to pose a real problem for the East Bergholt back line with his quick darting runs. Jonny Linard shot just over for Cops from a free kick and had another couple of shots just clear the visitors bar.
A great ball behind the Greens back line released Connor MaKay (sponsored by Wolfe Powell) and he beat his marker to run through and supply a fine finish. Godbold then burst through but his pass was blasted over by Todd. The visitors tried to press forward but Cops held out to reach the second round of the Cup!

AFC Kesgrave Reserves 5 Coplestonians Development 0
(Cops Development are sponsored by AMH Flooring)
A short trip to AFC Kesgrave was on the menu for the young Cops on Saturday..
A much strengthened home side with their first team not playing proved to be too strong on the day.
.
The signs were there early with the home side causing the Cops problems and it was a corner which saw them take the lead.
However, Cops did gradually grow into the game and had chances from Jake Howells, Hayden James and Ben Goddard all testing the Kesgrave keeper. But the home side struck again before halftime to make it 2-0.
.
Cops made many changes at half time which saw them made up of 16 and 17 year olds, arguably the youngest side they have fielded all season with the exceptions of Ben Goddard, Dave White and Daryl Fry. It was the latter who was denied a goal when he raced onto a ball and finished, only to be flagged offside.
The home side took that as a wake up call and after more pressure on Cops a cross evaded Cops keeper Jackson Piper to drop in at the far post 3-0.
.
That really put a dent in the Cops boys and they never really recovered from that with Kesgrave going on to score two more goals and the game finishing 5-0.
.
Although it was a tough defeat to take, the boys could be proud of their efforts and take a lot into the next game.
Up Next, an away trip to Coddenham in two weeks time.
