In-form Kestrels took the honours in the local derby to leapfrog their promotion rivals into second spot. Both sides played some attractive football in an open game but it was the visitors who were the more clinical in front of goal.
Kestrels started the better with Teddy Cooper having an effort blocked before Alex Biondi was denied by home keeper Derren Burn.
AFC then came more into the game and could have gone in front when Matt Oldfield played in Kieran Leggett only for the latter to shoot wide.
Back came Kestrels and Burn pushed out a fierce drive from Ryan Milbourne with Dan Risby failing to convert the rebound.
Burn then miscued a clearance straight to Milbourne before recovering to twice keep out efforts from Harry Fricker as Kestrels tried to force the ball home.
The visitors did take the lead on the half hour when Biondi deftly touched a long ball into the path of Risby who drove the ball home first time from 20 yards out.
AFC could have levelled only for Kestrels stopper George Bone to rush out and block Kamron Lord before Fricker missed a golden chance to double the lead as he side-footed wide from six yards after being set up by Risby.
The home side were building up a head of steam after the interval with Oldfield going close only for Fricker to control a long ball out of defence and slot a low drive into the bottom corner.
Fricker then made it 3-0 with his 11th goal of the season as he took advantage of some defensive hesitancy to crash the ball into the roof of the net from just outside the penalty area.
Kestrels were now well in control though AFC should have pulled a goal back when Oldfield pulled the ball across to Owen Lennie but he blazed over.
The scoring was completed in added time with two substitutes combining as Riley Doney drove home a throw in from Axl Rodwell.
SIL Senior League: Leiston St Margarets 1-4 Henley Athletic FC
Fears of rustiness, after a frustratingly dormant 3 weeks since our last game, proved unfounded, as Henley dominated to record a 1-4 away victory at the Saints, in front of a crowd of 47.
The visitors started brightly, Hooley forcing a save from the home keeper in only the 2nd minute. Henley opened the scoring after 21 minutes, Ben Prime and Tejano combining to win the ball back as Saints attempted to play their way out, Tejano threaded the ball through to Wharton-Richardson, whose shot was too hot to handle, the home keeper getting hands to it, but unable to prevent it just crossing the line for 0-1, the assistant official, instantly raising their flag to signal a goal. As Saints fumed at the decision, things only got worse for them, as a sin bin saw them reduced to 10 men, indeed it could have been worse, the sinbinned player sarcastically applauding the decision was very fortunate only to receive a talking to, and not a red card.
However, Henley did take advantage of the extra man, increasing their lead only 3 minutes later, Hooley’s deep cross picked out Ben Prime, he instantly fed Wharton-Richardson, who finished neatly from 6 yards for 0-2. Henley continued to have the lion’s share of possession, whilst Saints played some neat football, they failed to really trouble Read in the Hen’s goal in the 1st half, the score remaining 0-2 at the break.
Saints pulled a goal back a couple of minutes after the restart, a good passing move saw a low cross into the Henley box, White blocked well, but the ball looped up and over him, Baker the quickest to react, firing home from close range to bring the score to 1-2. This gave Saints an injection of confidence, enabling their best period of play in the match, but Henley defended stoutly and soon asserted their control again. Cole came close, but blazed over from Asker’s low cross, before Bell saw a header from a Hooley corner cleared off the line.
But on 60 minutes Henley made it 1-3, Cooper’s cross field ball picked out Ben Prime, He whipped in a fine cross, which the home keeper fumbled, Wharton-Richardson was on the spot to force the ball home and complete his hat-trick. To their credit, Saints kept coming and although Henley were in control, they always had to be aware of the threat of a break. But in the 89thminute the result was put beyond any doubt, Tejano pressing hard, deep in the Saints half, won the ball and slipped it through to Dende, he skipped past the defender and rifled home to make the final score 1-4.
A good team performance with the whole squad contributing well, the pace, commitment and relentless pressure evident all across the pitch. Wharton-Richardson’s hat-trick saw him collect the MOTM, his movement, both with and off the ball, creating space to cause damage, which he certainly did. Ben Prime ran him close, as well as having a part to play in 3 goals, his work rate and willingness to accept the ball saw him stand out.
Saints played some good football throughout and look in good shape, Baker, not only their scorer, but their MOTM.

Ransomes Sports 4 Haughley Utd Res 0
They say revenge is a dish best served cold, and on a damply raw November afternoon, Ransomes continued their stunning turnaround to what had previously been a difficult start to the season. They have been building form of their own just recently and as a result, they avenged an opening day defeat at the hands of Haughley by winning this reverse fixture 4-0.
With a bit of early winter in the air, it was Ransomes who warmed up the quicker of the two teams with Mo Fike and Luke Andrews stretching Haughley’s backline with their pace. They had the first real opportunity when Mo Fike broke through the inside right channel but he hurriedly dragged his shot wide of the far post.
It did not take Haughley long to find some rhythm of their own after this and an entertaining first half ensued as Thomas for the visitors, was twice denied by alert stops from Jack Friston in the Ransomes goal. It was a warning to the home side and one they heeded, because they broke the deadlock four minutes before half time. Mo Fike forced the opening goal with a burst of speed and surging run along the left by-line and his clipped cross took the slightest of deflections over the keeper leaving Callum Meadows the simple chance of scoring from six yards. It was enough to give Ransomes the advantage at the break against a Haughley side riding high.
Haughley needed a fast start after the interval and they got it, but Jack Friston once again blunted the visitors attack with a smart save to deny Bannister. There was plenty for Ransomes to contend with at this stage as Haughley performed strongly, but they lacked anything akin to a clinical competence in front of goal.
They visitors were eventually undone on 57 minutes as Brandon Thomas’ launched ball forward found Yani Duka. First, he went right, then left, and the defender did the same. When he went right again, the defender went to buy a hot dog as Duka placed a low drive into the far corner. The direction of the game changed with that goal and Ransomes remained purposeful in attack. Haughley did however, have one chance to get themselves back into the game, and it was a big one. A teasing low cross driven across the face of the Ransomes six yard box saw Wragg arrive at the far post, but with the goal at his mercy, he was allergic to the scoresheet and he somehow lifted his effort over the bar.
All the wind was eventually taken out of the visitors’ sails on 83 minutes when Josh Connicks delivery from the right wing fell kindly to Callum Meadows. With the Haughley defence exposed, the youngster calmly found the bottom corner as Ransomes went on to dominate the closing stages with some neat possession football.
Callum Meadows was soon celebrating again on 88 minutes as Mo Fike showed off his pace, and then delivered the perfect cross in finding Meadows on the edge of the penalty area, and the last word was to belong to the impressive youngster. He struck the ball confidently from 18 yards, the ball nestling neatly in the far corner, and the hat-trick was complete. He could push out his chest, but then again so could the whole team, because on the day, they rocked up to a man.
Four goals and a clean sheet will only help to increase belief within the Ransomes ranks. It does help build confidence, but the team will also stay humble in their search for stability and a positive outcome.
