SIL Senior Division: Henley Athletic FC 2-3 Old Newton Utd FC
A crowd of 87, were well entertained with a tight contest between two good sides, with only a 90th minute wonder goal, denying Henley a deserved share of the points against the league leaders.
Illness, weddings and injury forced Henley into last hour changes, Smythe stepping into the line up from his coaching role at short notice, and Alex Prime making his first start for the club. James Watling, making his 100th appearance was given the Captain’s armband for the day.
It was an even start to the game, neither side dominating, Dozzell having the best of the opening chances after 10 minutes, but he couldn’t get the ball out from his feet quick enough and his shot was saved. Henley got caught on the break on 18 minutes, with defenders up the field, a good ball picked out Smith, Read did well to get a hand on his shot, but couldn’t keep it out, Newton taking a 0-1 lead. Newton had a chance to increase their lead but blazed over, but on 40 minutes Henley found a route back into the game. A good build up and exchange of passes in midfield released Wharton-Richardson, who picked out a sublime finish from a narrow angle to bring the score level at 1-1 at HT.
Newton once again took the lead in the opening minutes of the 2nd half, with an almost carbon copy of their first goal, this time Wood finishing well across Read to make it 1-2. However, their lead was short lived, as Henley again fought back to equalise. A fine cross by Ballard, with Storey’s run taking the marker away, left Watling free to celebrate his 100th appearance with his 58th goal to bring the scores level at 2-2.
Both sides pushed for the winner, with Henley probably just shading possession, but neither were able to find a way through the well organised defences. That is, until the 90th minute, Newton were awarded, what is probably kindest described as a “soft” free kick on the halfway line. The drilled ball was, quite brilliantly, met full on the volley by Lawrence, giving Read no chance as it rifled into the net for 2-3. Giving Newton their first ever win over Henley in 8 attempts.
A harsh loss, when a draw would’ve been a fair result, but as I’ve often said, on the many, many occasions, when Henley have nicked all three points in the same manner, goals win games, and what a goal it was! Make sure you catch the video highlights, which I hope to have out tomorrow or Tuesday.
Newton are a very good side, they clearly know each other well from all their time together at Thurston, they are strong, committed and organised and have some real talent, they’ll be there or thereabouts at the end of the season, I’m sure. Henley’s new side, continue to blossom, the mere fact that we ran the league leaders so close, is a demonstration of our progress in such a short time, especially with players missing. Young Jordi Asker picked up the MOTM award, strong in defence and striding out with the ball at his feet at every opportunity, a fine showing.
Coplestonians Developement 3 Ransomes Sports 1
Ransomes will not be judged by results but by their performances. They tried everything to win this game but were left feeling disappointed as Cops emerged as victors. If Ransomes can find a solution to deal with those transitional moments during the 90 minutes where lapses in concentration, focus and awareness let them down, then, in the long term, this young group of players will be successful. They can however, take heart from a lively performance.
Ransomes enjoyed an 8th minute escape as Cops struck the bar with the hosts eventually taking the lead after 16 minutes. It came from a deep corner to the far post that was eventually bundled over the line and the visitors had it all to do.
Ransomes fearlessly took the game to Cops and thought that they had equalised on 37 minutes only for Mo Fike’s effort to be ruled out for offside by the club linesman’s flag – it left the visitors disappointed and frustrated.
There had been a growth in the Ransomes performance as the half wore on and that improvement continued after the break. On 51 minutes a quickly taken free kick by Jack Randall was the instigator for Ransomes equalising goal. Lamon Haynes-Sparkes collected possession on the right flank and a retreating back line offered him the space to race into the 18 yard box before he fired home a superb right-foot shot high into the roof of the net.
That joy however, was short lived as Cops were back in front three minutes later, a shot from distance dipping over Lewis Cates. Chances grew scarce for Ransomes after that but the contest stayed in the balance until the 71st minute when the home side opened up clear daylight by adding a third.
The hosts were now able to hold Ransomes at arm’s length but they could not afford to relax as Kavanagh Warner passed up a great opportunity in front of an open goal.
Ransomes can only reflect (and hopefully learn). It is the most frustrating thing in football when you get back in the changing room believing you should have got something from the game. Being self-critical, Ransomes weren’t effective enough in the decisive moments in both boxes. The application of the players is not in question; there were some moments of quality in the team today but our off the ball decision making could improve. That was missing at times and unfortunately, that made a big difference in the game. As the structure and organisation improves, so will the individual and team performances.

COPS FIND THEIR MOJO AND MOVE UP THE TABLE!
SIL SENIOR DIVISION
Coplestonians FC 4 East Bergholt United 1
Todd and Connick notch their first goals to see Cops home!
Cops were looking for their first win of the season, one which might lift them off the bottom spot! Their opponents sat comfortably in mid-table with a couple of wins under their belt.
Cops opened well and gradually looked the more threatening side. They opened the scoring when Ross Turner crossed for Adam Todd to fire home, his first goal for the Club. Cops pressed for a second with Danny Allen a constant threat, shooting narrowly wide. They did extend their lead when a free kick was knocked out to Nay Woollard whose cross was headed home by Ross Turner (sponsored by R J & E Services).
The Green’s then had their best spell of the half as they pressed to reduce the arrears. However, some great blocks and brave goalkeeping by Michal Paduszynski kept them at bay. A third goal followed as Jordan Godbold evaded a strong challenge and sent Jonny Linard clear to finish in style. HT 3-0.
After the break Cops could have put the game to bed but the visiting keeper saved well from Todd. On 65 minutes the visitors got a lifeline through an own goal and for several minutes Cops looked nervous, probably due to their previous inability to finish games off! However, as time ran out it was Cops who looked more likely to increase their lead. Finally, Cops did have the final say as Woollard and Connor MacKay exchanged passes and headers to set up a shot for Drew Connick to fire home. FT 4-1
MOTM: Nay Woollard

Cops Reserves fought back from 3-1 down to share the spoils with Bacton whilst a fine debut performance by Jackson Piper in goal for Cops Development helped them to their first win of the season.

SIL DIVISION TWO
Bacton Reserves 3 Coplestonians Reserves 3
Cops were a goal down on 4 minutes when they conceded a penalty. However, the visitors took control of proceedings and Ben Manuel (sponsored by Merv Smith) scored a deserved equaliser when he collected a through ball from Josh Howe and chipped the keeper. HT1-1
Bacton quickly went 3-1 up with two breakaway goals after the break. Once again Cops had to work their way back into the game and both teams were reduced to 10 men after a midfield altercation. Cops got a lifeline through a penalty which Jack Lawrence fired home. With time running out and deep into added time young Tye Read rescued a deserved point for Cops.

Coplestonians Development 3 Ransomes Sports Reserves 1
(Cops Development are sponsored by AMH Flooring)
Very evenly matched sides faced each other on Saturday when Cops met Ransomes Reserves in a Div 3 league encounter . Both sides with equal youth and experience looking to put points on the board.
It was Cops who had the pick of the early chances, the best falling to the lively Jake Howells who hit the bar after a good corner from Darcy Pleace. From another good corner Alfie Prior poked the ball goal wards and Dave White made sure the ball found its way into the net (1-0).
For the first time this season Jackson Piper was in goal for the Cops and along with the defence he kept the away side at bay, limiting them to long range shooting.
Half time 1-0
The away side who had finished the 1st half stronger, picked up where they left off and after a quick throw the right back picked up the ball and fired into the Cops net via a slight deflection (1-1).
Ransomes were dominating at this stage, however against the run of play Darcy Pleace won a great header in the midfield which dropped to substitute Sam Thorpe, who with his back to goal turned on 25 yards and lifted the ball over the Ransomes goalkeeper and into the net ( 2-1).
The away side did have more chances to score but a brave save from Piper at the feet of the striker and a clearance off the line by Matt Simmons preserved the lead.
This was followed up by another good save from the Cops young keeper from a free kick just outside the box.
More chances for Cops then came in a flurry but the away goal keeper saved well at close range.
Second half Sub Hayden James was proving a menace and with a great run and pass played in Jake Howells who again was denied by the bar with the keeper well beaten.
With the legs going in both teams it was Cops who scored the fourth goal of the game. A ball into Jake Howells saw him hold off his marker before playing in Adam Newson to glide in behind the away defence and finish the move with all the swagger of Hugh Hefner and Ronaldo rolled into one! (3-1)
That is how it stayed to the final whistle. Up next for Cops a short trip to AFC Kesgrave Reserves.
Full time 3-1 Cops
