The top two sides in the Senior Division faced each other at Church Road in front of a healthy crowd as Old Newton started the day with a six point advantage albeit with the visitors having a game in hand.
After a cagey opening 15 minutes the game eventually came to life when Alex Oakley sprinted down the left for Old Newton and crossed for Andrew Wood who fired over at full-stretch.
The hosts then took the lead on 25 minutes as a long diagonal ball from George Crowe found Kieran Waller and he cut inside before sending in a low shot which crept into the corner.
Stowupland responded with home keeper George Bugg twice keeping out goalbound efforts from Roman Rampley with fine stops before Luke Pattison blazed over.
However, the visitors then shot themselves in the foot as they lost the ball just outside their own penalty area and Wood took advantage as he rounded the keeper to score.
Waller drove over at the start of the second period for Newton but then Stowupland began to press. Shaun Thorrold had an effort deflected wide and Blake Richards’ drive was blocked on the line shortly afterwards
Harry Whiting-Noakes then struck the bar for Newton from 20 yards before the dangerous Rampley made ground down the left before firing against a post with Thorrold turning home the rebound on 57 minutes to halve the deficit.
Stowupland piled forward with Jon Carver glancing a header from a corner wide before substitute Matt Chaplin went close. Rampley then burst through again only for Bugg to produce another fine stop.
The hosts thought they had made the game safe on 87 minutes as Jamie Smith converted after being set-up by Charlie Cook only for the goal to be disallowed just as the two teams were lining up for the restart.
Falcons keeper Dale Watling then made a superb double save from Smith and Cook just before the final whistle as Newton took the points in a hard-fought game.
SIL Senior League: Henley Athletic FC 2-0 Wickham Market FC
Playing only their third game in a six week period, a rusty looking Henley still had enough to take the three points with a 2-0 home win over an industrious and committed Wickham side. A crowd of 68 saw a hard fought battle, in which despite Henley dominating for periods, Wickham still posed a threat throughout the 90 minutes.
The first real chance of the game fell to Henley, good build up play saw Tejano release Ballard, but his scuffed shot went narrowly wide. However, it was Henley who took the lead after 18 minutes, Storey scoring with a bullet header from a Cole corner to make it 1-0. Henley were denied what appeared to be a clear cut penalty after 25 minutes, when Cole was tripped in the box, more controversy followed on 32 minutes, Ballard finding the net, only to see it chalked off by a contentious offside decision. Henley made it 2-0 after 44 minutes, a lovely through ball from Tejano picked out Ballard’s curved run, allowing him to impudently chip over the advancing Wickham keeper.
A sinbin for Graham after 55 minutes, put Henley on the back foot for 10 minutes, but they defended efficiently against repeated Wickham attacks, in their best period of the game, only really seriously challenging Read on one occasion, forcing a good block low down at his near post. Both sides continued to attack, but it was a day when midfields and defences came out on top. The only other occasion of note was a penalty appeal from Wickham, when they thought the ball had struck Prime’s hand at close range. However the game drew to a close with Henley 2-0 victors.
Although clearly rusty after such a disrupted few weeks, Henley still had that cutting edge and the desire, epitomised by MOTM Tejano, who was simply everywhere at once for 90 minutes.
Wickham play the right way, defend well, are strong and fully committed, but lack the presence in the final third, but if they can solve that issue, will soon bounce up the table.

Ransomes go nap in hard earnt cup win

Leiston St. Margarets 3 Ransomes Sports 5

Ransomes Sports skipper Mo Fike scored in the 90th minute to finally put this cup tie to bed and secure a quarter final draw against the winners of either AFC Kesgrave or Capel Plough.
Leiston St. Margarets started in the ascendancy but their efforts were to no avail as they barely landed a glancing blow on a youthful visiting side that coped well in those opening exchanges. Ransomes meanwhile looked lively on the counterattack and edged ahead on 13 minutes. Luke Andrews persistence in the challenge won him the ball inside the Saints penalty area with the youngster bludgeoning a low shot from 12 yards past the home keeper that went in off the far post.
Ransomes continued on the front foot and threatened to cut loose after Andrews’ first goal. Leiston St. Margarets had been good in the first ten minutes or so but Ransomes had started to push them back, to assume control. Now they looked to turn the screw.
Yani Duka had the home keeper at full stretch. The keeper then made a superb triple save from Duka, Harry Matthews and Mo Fike as the ball pinballed around the home six-yard box and the home side were struggling to cope with Ransomes’ alacrity on the break.
Brandon Thomas was next to test the keeper as the visitors continued to ask all the questions.
Missing in action during that opening half hour, Leiston St. Margarets wanted to show why they had defeated higher league opposition in the previous round and the game now had a different feel. They should have been out of contention, three or four goals down in that opening spell. Now they sensed that the equaliser was there for them and on 32 minutes they pounced.
It was not so much they created the moment but rather Ransomes handed them the opportunity to break and, in the blink of an eye, the visitors had been pegged back – game on.
Five minutes later and Ransomes retook the lead. Mo Fike found himself unmarked at the back post from Jack Randall’s corner. His control was sweet and his finish even sweeter as he fired home through a crowd of half-hearted defenders.
Just two minutes elapsed as Ransomes added to that lead. Mo Fike’s slick pass to Yani Duka found him with his back to goal. He was all but unmolested in the heart of the home defence as he conducted a series of keepy uppy’s before an ensuing imperious swivel saw him turn and volley home in style. All that remained was to admire the technique.
At this stage, Leiston St. Margarets were stuck in their own rut, unable to knit any sequences together, so Ransomes kindly aided them with their latest defensive farce on 43 minutes as a whirlwind first half drew to a close.
The opening period following the interval break was a turgid affair in comparision. Both teams struggled to dominate or create any clear chances – that was until Yani Duka created space on the right hand with his dancing feet and his cut back from the by-line was ruthlessly rifled home by Luke Andrews on 75 minutes.
The goal came about at a time when the Saints were still working their way back into this game in search of an equaliser, but there was an ecstatic response to this dramatic game as the home side reduced the deficit to one goal yet again by converting an 80th minute penalty which ensured plenty of tension during the remaining ten minutes. It made for a nervous ending in respect of Ransomes but Leiston St. Margarets did not have an answer and the visitors survived as Mo Fike went on to put the result beyond doubt as he slammed home a fifth in the very last attack of the game. The goal sparked wild celebratory scenes within the Ransomes on-field ranks as they confirmed progression to the quarter finals.
