It was with huge sadness that the local football community learned of Eric’s untimely, tragic passing on Sunday 5th April.
Eric had contracted the Covid-19 virus some weeks before and despite a valiant fight and the efforts of the wonderful staff at Ipswich Hospital, eventually succumbed to this dreadful disease.
As we are sure that you are all aware, Eric was truly “Mr Stonham”, fulfilling pretty much every role at Stonham Aspal FC over the 50 years of his involvement there, ranging from Secretary to Groundsman (and a few that didn’t carry a title, no doubt). He was always willing to step up and do whatever was necessary for the running of his beloved Club.
Eric was also a tremendously valued, long-standing member of the SIL Management Committee, consistently contributing to discussions on every aspect of league administration, always prepared to voice opinion, particularly on issues that he saw as imposing more pressure on those who freely give their time to run their teams and clubs in ever more difficult circumstances. A true supporter of local football and those within it.
He regularly put himself forward to chair or be part of various SIL sub-committees over the years, including most latterly, chairing the group tasked with reviewing, re-structuring and overseeing the SIL Sportsmanship Awards, that have proved so popular among league clubs in recent times.
All those who knew Eric will testify of his immeasurable contribution to Stonham Aspal FC, to the SIL Management Committee and to local football in general. A true, loyal and real footballing man and a True Gentleman, who will be deeply missed by all of us.
The League send their condolences to Eric’s family and Stonham Aspal FC
