Division 5 Coddenham Athletic defeated Div. 4 Gipping Gnats in the all SIL Suffolk Primary Cup at a very wet JobServe Community Stadium, home of Colchester United. A downpour of biblical proportions for an hour before the scheduled kick off put the game in considerable doubt, however the rain eventually abated and good drainage along with pitch sweeping by Suffolk FA staff and others the pitch was declared playable, but with a 45 minute delayed kick off, and the game reduced to 40 minutes each way. Coddenham took the lead in the 20th minute with a good strike from distance finding the corner of the net, Gipping equalised on 39 minutes to make it 1-1 at half time. Coddenham regained the lead on 52 minutes only for Gipping to again equalise on 63 minutes, which remained the score on 80nminutes taking the game to a penalty shootout. Gipping took the first penalty, but it was saved by Coddenham keeper, the following penalties were scored until Gipping cleared the bar with their 4th kick leaving Coddenham needing to score to win the match , but unfortunately this was also deposited into the stands, Gipping scored their 5th kick again leaving Coddenham needing to score, which they duly did winning 4-3 on penalty kicks. Both teams should be congratulated on a good sporting game played in trying conditions, with special congratulations to Coddenham on defeating higher division opponents to complete a very successful season on their return to SIL football.
